Language Models

10 paid against 16 free you can run yourself.

Paid against free › AI & Automation › AI Models & Inference › Language Models · AI and models on Repo Radar

Language model APIs give applications direct access to the model makers' own models, paid per token. The paid options range from frontier labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI) to lower-cost providers of strong models (DeepSeek, Moonshot's Kimi, Z.ai's GLM, Alibaba's Qwen, Mistral) and enterprise-focused Cohere. Prices differ by more than a hundred times between the cheapest and most capable models, and most vendors add discounts for cached input and batch jobs. On the open-source side several of the same labs publish open weights (gpt-oss, Qwen, Gemma, Kimi K3) that you can run locally with Ollama or llamafile, fine-tune with LlamaFactory or Transformers, and constrain with Outlines or Instructor. Marks come from vendor pricing pages and project READMEs as of 18 October 2026; nothing was tested hands-on.

Repositories

  • MinishLab/model2vecModel2Vec makes fast static embeddings from larger models. It is an embedding tool for search, not a language model to generate text, so it fits embedding and NLP tools better.Source
  • MaartenGr/BERTopicBERTopic builds interpretable topics from document collections with BERT embeddings and c-TF-IDF. It is a topic-modelling library rather than a language model.Source
  • LibreTranslate/LibreTranslateLibreTranslate is a free, self-hosted machine translation API. It is a translation service, better compared with translation tools than with general language models.Source
  • pemistahl/lingua-pyLingua detects which natural language a text is written in. It is a focused NLP utility rather than a language model for generation.Source
  • segment-any-text/wtpsplitwtpsplit splits text into sentences or other units. It is a text-segmentation toolkit, a building block for NLP pipelines rather than a language model.Source
  • MaartenGr/KeyBERTKeyBERT extracts keywords from documents using BERT embeddings. It is a keyword-extraction utility rather than a language model.Source
  • deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V3The DeepSeek-V3 repository has had no push since 28 August 2025, and the newer V4 models have no comparable repository, so it does not represent DeepSeek's current open models.Source
  • QwenLM/Qwen3The Qwen3 repository has been superseded by the Qwen3.8 repository (G4), which covers the current models; its last push was in January 2026.Source
  • MoonshotAI/Kimi-K2The Kimi K2 repository has been superseded by Kimi K3 (G6), and its last push was on 21 January 2026.Source
  • meta-llama/llama-modelsThis repository holds utilities for Llama models under Meta's own licence and has had no push since 11 February 2026, so other open model families were preferred.Source
  • mistralai/mistral-inferenceMistral's official inference library is archived, with its last push on 16 June 2026.Source
  • zai-org/GLM-4.5The GLM-4.5 repository covers older GLM models and has had no push since 1 February 2026; Z.ai's current GLM-5 models are covered through its API (P9).Source
  • karpathy/nanochatnanochat shows how to train a small ChatGPT-like model for about $100. It is an educational project rather than a language model to adopt.Source
  • rasbt/LLMs-from-scratchA book and code that implement a ChatGPT-like language model in PyTorch step by step. It is learning material rather than a model or tool to adopt.Source
  • google/langextractLangExtract is a library for extracting structured information from text with language models. It overlaps Instructor and Outlines for structured output, which are more established.Source

Gaps

What the research could not settle from the vendors' own pages.

What vendors don't publish

  • Gemini prices are scheduled to rise: Gemini 4 Argon input doubles on 1 December 2026 and several Flash models double on 1 January 2027, so current comparisons will date quickly.Gemini API · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1
  • Model API pricing pages do not state the rate limits or throughput that come with each price, so cheap models can be hard to use at volume without checking limits separately.OpenAI API, Grok API, DeepSeek API, Z.AI Developer Platform · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2 · source 3 · source 4
  • Qwen's prices on Model Studio differ by region and the free quota exists only in Singapore, so the price a buyer pays depends on where the account runs.Alibaba Cloud Model Studio · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1
