AI Coding Agents

9 paid against 20 free you can run yourself.

Paid against free › Build & Ship › Vibe Coding & App Builders › AI Coding Agents · Coding agents and dev tools on Repo Radar

AI coding agents read your codebase, edit files across it, run commands and tests, and increasingly work in the background or in the cloud. The paid tools differ mainly in where the agent lives (an editor such as Cursor and Kiro, the terminal such as Claude Code and Warp, or cloud agents such as Devin and Factory) and in how usage is billed: bundled quotas, credits, or pass-through API rates with your own keys (Amp, Warp). The open-source side is led by terminal agents (Codex CLI, OpenCode, Crush, Goose) and editor agents (Cline, Kilo Code), plus OpenHands for self-hosted agent fleets. Marks come from vendor pricing and product pages and project READMEs as of 18 October 2026; nothing was tested hands-on.

Excluded candidates

Looked at, and left out of the comparison, with the reason.

Paid apps

  • ReplitReplit describes itself as an AI app and website builder that produces a working app without coding. It belongs with app builders rather than with agents that work inside an existing codebase.Source
  • WindsurfWindsurf's pricing address now redirects to Devin's plans, where the editor continues as Devin Desktop. It is covered through Devin (P5) rather than listed twice.Source
  • Google JulesJules is Google's autonomous coding agent, sold inside Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions with higher limits rather than as its own plan, so it cannot be priced alongside the dedicated tools.Source
  • JetBrains JunieJunie is JetBrains' AI coding agent for its IDEs. It covers the same in-editor agent workflow as GitHub Copilot, Cline and Kilo Code, which work across more editors, so it ranked below them.Source
  • TabnineThe Tabnine website and pricing address now redirect to Tricentis pages (a product list and a contact form), so there is no self-serve plan to compare with the selected tools.Source
  • QoderQoder is an AI coding IDE with completion and conversational programming that also plugs into VS Code and JetBrains. It overlaps Cursor and Kiro and ranked below them for this comparison.Source

Repositories

  • RooCodeInc/Roo-CodeRoo Code was an AI agent team for the code editor. The repository is archived, with its last push on 15 May 2026, so it is not a supported choice today.Source
  • TabbyML/tabbyTabby is a self-hosted AI coding assistant server for code completion and chat rather than an autonomous agent, and it has had no push since 30 June 2026.Source
  • coder/agentapiAgentAPI is an HTTP API wrapper for other agents such as Claude Code, Goose, Aider and Codex, not an agent itself, and the repository is archived.Source
  • stackblitz-labs/bolt.diybolt.diy prompts, runs and deploys full-stack web apps in the browser with any model. It is an app builder, compared better with Lovable-style tools than with coding agents.Source
  • DietrichGebert/ponytailPonytail is an add-on that changes how an existing AI agent thinks about code ("think like the laziest senior dev"). It needs one of the selected agents to run, so it is not an alternative to them.Source
  • affaan-m/ECCECC is a performance system of skills, instincts and memory layered on top of an agent harness. It extends the selected agents rather than replacing them.Source
  • continuedev/continueContinue was an open coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the CLI. Its README says the repository is no longer actively maintained and is read-only after a final 2.0.0 release.Source
  • plandex-ai/plandexPlandex is a terminal coding agent for large projects, but the repository has had no push since 3 October 2025, so it is behind the actively developed agents selected here.Source
  • SWE-agent/SWE-agentSWE-agent takes a GitHub issue and tries to fix it automatically with a chosen model. It is a research tool, and OpenHands (G5) covers the same work as a maintained product.Source
  • anthropics/claude-codeThe repository has no licence that GitHub can identify and belongs to the vendor of the commercial Claude Code, which is compared as a paid tool (P2).Source
  • QwenLM/qwen-codeQwen's open terminal coding agent covers the same terminal workflow as Gemini CLI, Codex and OpenCode, which have larger communities, so it ranked below them.Source
  • esengine/DeepSeek-ReasonixA coding agent for complex engineering tasks built around DeepSeek models. It overlaps Open Interpreter and OpenCode for low-cost models and ranked below them.Source
  • 1jehuang/jcodejcode is a high-performance coding agent harness written in Rust. It covers the same terminal workflow as OpenCode and Crush with a much smaller community, so it ranked below them.Source
  • can1357/oh-my-pioh-my-pi is a coding agent with an IDE wired in from Stencil Labs. It overlaps Cline and Kilo Code, which support more editors, so it ranked below them.Source
  • codewhale-hq/CodewhaleCodewhale is an open Rust agent engine and terminal client for the Codewhale service. It ties the open client to one vendor service, so the vendor-neutral agents were preferred.Source

Gaps

What the research could not settle from the vendors' own pages.

What vendors don't publish

  • Most vendors describe higher plans as multiples ("4x Plus", "about 5x Pro", "significantly higher quotas") without saying how many agent tasks or tokens a plan covers, which makes plans hard to compare.Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Devin, Factory · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2 · source 3 · source 4

Where vendor pages disagree

  • The old Windsurf pricing address now redirects to Devin, and Windsurf no longer publishes plans of its own. Existing Windsurf users have to read Devin's plans to see what they will pay.Devin · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2
  • Gemini CLI's README says unpaid and Google One users were moved to Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026, while the repository keeps shipping releases. Who should still use it is unclear from the README alone.google-gemini/gemini-cli · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1
