What it is

A large open-source project, at 89,500 stars, that began as a single coding agent and has become a console for several. Its own README now describes the product as Agent Canvas, a self-hosted control centre that can drive OpenHands, Claude Code, Codex and Gemini, locally or on a remote machine.

What it is good for. Someone who already uses one coding assistant from a terminal and wants a screen instead: a list of running jobs, the files each one touched, and the ability to start another without opening a new window. It also suits anyone who wants those jobs to run inside a container rather than directly on the machine they work on.

Good
  • MIT licensed, read from the licence file and completely unmodified, so there is no paid key and no restriction on commercial use.
  • It runs several different assistants, so you are not tied to one vendor's tool.
  • Active: version 1.24.0 was published on 25 September 2026, four days before this edition.
Watch for
  • The repository changed owner and the product changed shape, and the names no longer line up. The command you install is @openhands/agent-canvas, not openhands, and the container image is ghcr.io/openhands/agent-canvas. A search for the repository name does not find the package.
  • 452 open issues and 429 open pull requests. That is a lot of unfinished business for one project, and it tells you the pace of change is high.
  • It runs commands and edits files. Without the container option it is doing that directly on the machine you are sitting at, and a mistaken instruction is a real mistake.

196,600 stars, MIT, a coding agent for the terminal; far more popular, but it is the agent itself rather than a console for running several.

  • cline/cline

67,600 stars, Apache-2.0, an agent available as a library, an editor extension or a command-line assistant; it lives inside an editor rather than giving you a separate screen.

  • Aider-AI/aider

49,200 stars, Apache-2.0, covered in Edition 25; it commits every change to git as it goes, which is a different and smaller promise.
