sandboxd: self-hosted app builder. Builds and runs apps via AI on your server.

In simple English

This tool lets you run your own private version of services like Lovable or Bolt on your own server. You give it a description of an application, and an internal assistant writes the code inside a sealed container. Each application runs at its own preview web address so you can test it immediately. You can also launch over eighty popular open-source apps with a single click. It runs on Docker, uses SQLite for storage, and costs you nothing except the price of your server.

What it is

sandboxd is a self-hosted platform that manages isolated Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server) containers and drives coding assistants via a simple API (a set of rules that lets different software programs talk to each other). It provides a web console for managing your applications, viewing file changes, and watching apps build in real time.

What it is good for

Solo builders who want to host multiple AI-generated applications or open-source tools on a single private server without paying for expensive cloud platforms.

Good
  • Runs eighty-plus popular open-source apps with a single click.
  • Includes an optional web console with live previews and file editing.
  • Sleeps idle applications to save server memory.
Watch for
  • Requires Docker and basic Linux server administration skills.
  • API security is off by default and needs manual hardening for public use.
  • Container isolation provides less security than full virtual machines.
