← Security and privacy

In simple English

Every app needs a way for users to sign up, log in, and reset passwords. Building this yourself takes weeks and invites security mistakes. This tool handles all user accounts, passwords, and security checks on your own server. Your website talks to it using standard web requests. It costs nothing to run yourself, but setting it up takes real technical skill.

What it is

Ory Kratos is an open-source, cloud-native identity management system written in Go (a programming language built by Google for fast servers). It provides ready-made login, registration, password recovery, and multi-factor authentication flows over HTTP APIs (Application Programming Interface, a way for different programs to talk to each other).

What it is good for

Solo builders who want to stop writing password hashing and session logic from scratch. It replaces paid services like Auth0 or Firebase with a system you own.

Good
  • Handles complex security flows like passkeys, social login, and multi-factor authentication out of the box.
  • Separates user management entirely from your app code so you can rebuild your frontend without breaking logins.
  • Scales to millions of users without needing expensive proprietary cloud user directories.
Watch for
  • Steep setup difficulty for a non-programmer, as it requires configuring databases, Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server), and reverse proxies.
  • Requires a dedicated SQL database (such as PostgreSQL) to store user data safely.
  • Advanced enterprise features like SAML and SCIM require a paid commercial licence from the creators.
