Kodus: AI code review. Reviews pull requests using your own AI models.

In simple English

This tool reads your code changes on GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket and flags bugs, security risks, and style mistakes. It runs automatically every time someone opens a pull request, which is a request to merge new code into the main project. You can connect it to any major AI provider using your own API key, meaning you pay the AI provider directly with no added markup. You can also run it completely on your own server for privacy. The base version is free to use, while paid tiers add team metrics and priority queues.

What it is

Kodus is an open-source AI code review system with a self-hosted option, custom rule engines, and multi-platform Git support. It combines a NestJS (a framework for building server-side applications in TypeScript) API, a Next.js dashboard, and background workers to analyze pull requests.

What it is good for

Solo builders and teams who want automated code reviews on their pull requests without paying high markups to a third-party SaaS platform or sending proprietary code to locked-down commercial bots.

Good
  • Bring your own API key to use whichever language model you prefer without paying markup.
  • Can be self-hosted on your own server using Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server) for total privacy.
  • Works across multiple Git providers including GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, and Forgejo.
Watch for
  • Requires a server with at least 2 CPU cores, 8 GB of RAM, and 60 GB of disk space if self-hosted.
  • Uses a custom licence rather than a standard open-source licence, which may restrict commercial re-distribution.
  • Setup involves configuring multiple services including an API, worker queue, and webhooks receiver.
