In simple English
This program lets you turn documents, images, and videos into different file formats without opening a separate app window. You hold down a key, drag a file, and drop it onto a menu that pops up near your mouse cursor. Your files stay on your computer and are never uploaded anywhere. The software is free and open-source, and it does not cost anything to use. You only need a modern computer and a few minutes to install it.
What it is
Filee is a desktop application that converts hundreds of file types by letting you drop files onto a visual menu at your cursor. It handles images, documents, spreadsheets, e-books, audio, video, and archives entirely on your machine.
What it is good for
Solo builders who need to quickly convert web images, resize screenshots, or turn documents into different formats without using slow online conversion websites.
Summary (Key Points)from the README
Key features
- Donut at the cursor: Hold a key, drag files onto a format in the donut that opens where the pointer is. Only formats that fit the dragged files appear.
- 268 formats offline: Images, PDF, Office documents, HWP, e-books, archives, fonts, CAD, 3D models and geospatial data convert without Office, Hancom Office or LibreOffice. Nothing is uploaded, and the result is saved next to the original.
- Browser drag-in: Drag a picture, file link or download from Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Filee saves it to Downloads (or keeps only the converted file) and converts it, and links download without your browser's sign-in.
- Multi-step routes: Routes with several steps, such as HWP → HWPX → DOCX, are found automatically.
- Batch conversion: Many files convert at once, in parallel.
- Crop before converting: The Crop slice opens pictures one by one, and only the framed part is saved.
- Watch folders: Every file that lands in a watched folder is converted.
- Two sides per donut: Press Tab or turn the mouse wheel to flip it to less common formats and tools.
- Command line: The `filee` command, such as `filee convert photo.heic --to jpg` or `filee watch D:\Inbox --to pdf --move-originals`, uses the same engines and presets as the app.
- Interface: Light and dark themes, a custom accent colour and donut opacity, and 17 interface languages, including right-to-left Arabic.
Ways to install
| Platform or method | What it needs | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11, Setup (`Filee-<version>-win-Setup.exe`) | Runs its own installer; needs nothing else on the PC | Run installer |
| Windows 10/11, Portable ZIP (`win-Portable.zip`) | Unzip and run `Filee.exe` | Unzip and run |
| Windows, Microsoft Store | Store listing | Install from the Store |
| macOS 13+ (preview), `osx-arm64` or `osx-x64` package | Unpack and run `./install.sh`; or open the `.dmg` | Unpack and run script, or drag to Applications |
| Linux x64/ARM64 (Ubuntu 22.04+) | Unpack, run `./install.sh` without root; needs Python 3 | Unpack and run script |
| Build from source | .NET 10 SDK on Windows, macOS or Linux; optional PowerShell script for engines | Build with `dotnet run` |
Important
- Windows crash on old Windows 10: Filee and Setup may open with no window and no error on Windows 10 that hasn't been updated for a long time, on processors that support CET. Installing the latest cumulative update is recommended. If that isn't possible, the README gives PowerShell commands to disable the protection for Filee alone.
- Unsigned early releases: Windows releases up to 2.0.0 are not signed. Even signed releases can trigger SmartScreen warnings until they have been downloaded enough.
- macOS is a preview: The build isn't notarized, so the first start needs approval in System Settings.
- Linux drag needs X11: On Wayland, use the drop zone and the file manager's right-click menu instead.
- Optional engines: Some formats need Ghostscript, LibreOffice, Pandoc, calibre or FFmpeg. These are downloaded only when you need them.
- Some formats are read-only: FON, FBX, MHTML and OFD can be read but not written, and script files (PY, BAT and similar) are read but never run.
- Experimental features: Live Photo and Motion Photo conversion is marked experimental.
- Internet connections: Filee checks GitHub for new releases by default, which can be turned off in Settings. It also downloads engines and OCR languages when you choose them.

- Converts hundreds of file formats without uploading anything to the internet.
- Pop-up menu appears right at your cursor when you drag and drop files.
- Includes a command-line tool for automated batch conversions and watch folders.
- Requires .NET 10 SDK and specific build steps if you want to run it from source.
- Some advanced file types need optional helper engines downloaded separately.
- Linux drag gestures need an X11 display server to work properly.
