MCP tools connect AI agents to the apps and data they need through the Model Context Protocol. The paid options are platforms that host ready-made MCP servers and handle the sign-in to users' accounts (Composio, Pipedream, Arcade, Smithery, Metorial, Zapier) or gateways that let an organisation approve, scope and audit the MCP servers its agents use (MCP Manager, Docker). On the open-source side you can self-host gateways and registries (IBM ContextForge, agentgateway, Docker MCP Gateway, MCPJungle, Metorial), build your own servers with FastMCP, or install single-purpose MCP servers such as memory or context tools. Marks come from vendor pricing and product pages and project READMEs as of 18 October 2026; nothing was tested hands-on.

Paid apps

  • Klavis AIKlavis AI's pricing page now sells isolated sandbox environments and task data for AI labs and reinforcement-learning training. It no longer offers a self-serve MCP plan to compare.Source

Repositories

  • thedotmack/claude-memclaude-mem is a persistent memory system for Claude Code and other agents, now defaulting to a hosted memory service with sign-in. It is an agent memory product rather than an MCP tool or platform.Source
  • Panniantong/Agent-ReachAgent Reach gives AI agents internet access to sites such as Twitter, Reddit and YouTube, mostly through command-line tools, with MCP as one of several routes. It fits web research tools better than MCP tooling.Source
  • modelcontextprotocol/serversThe official collection of reference MCP servers, kept to demonstrate the protocol. It is a set of examples rather than a tool to adopt, and its licence is moving from MIT to Apache 2.0.Source
  • modelcontextprotocol/registryThe community registry service for MCP servers. It is shared infrastructure that catalogs like Smithery and Docker build on, not a tool an agent builder runs.Source
  • modelcontextprotocol/inspectorMCP Inspector is a visual testing tool for MCP servers. It helps developers debug servers rather than connecting agents to tools, so it complements FastMCP rather than competing here.Source
  • mcp-use/mcp-usemcp-use is a full-stack framework for building MCP apps and servers. It overlaps FastMCP (G7), which is the more widely used framework, so it ranked below it.Source
  • arcadeai-labs/smithery-cliThe Smithery CLI installs and manages MCP servers from the Smithery registry. It is a client for the hosted Smithery (P1) rather than a standalone alternative, with no push since 31 May 2026.Source
  • lastmile-ai/mcp-agentmcp-agent is a framework for building agents with MCP and workflow patterns. It is an agent framework rather than MCP tooling, and it has had no push since 25 January 2026.Source
  • upstash/context7Context7 is an MCP server and platform that gives coding agents up-to-date library documentation. It is a single-purpose documentation tool, better compared with API documentation tools.Source
  • github/github-mcp-serverGitHub's official MCP server connects agents to GitHub only. It is one vendor's server, which the selected gateways and catalogs can host, rather than a general MCP tool.Source
  • microsoft/playwright-mcpPlaywright MCP is a browser automation MCP server from Microsoft. It is a single-purpose server, better compared with browser and testing tools.Source
  • oraios/serenaSerena is an MCP toolkit that gives coding agents semantic code retrieval and editing. It is a coding-agent add-on, better compared with AI coding tools.Source
  • agentic-community/mcp-gateway-registryAn enterprise MCP gateway and registry with about 1,000 stars. It covers the same ground as IBM ContextForge and agentgateway, which are larger and more active, so it ranked below them.Source
  • BerriAI/litellmLiteLLM is an AI gateway for calling 100+ LLM providers through one API. MCP support is a side feature of a model gateway, so it fits LLM gateways better than MCP tools.Source

What vendors don't publish

  • Zapier's MCP page does not say what Zapier MCP costs, what plan it needs or how many actions are included, so it cannot be priced against usage-based platforms.Zapier MCP · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1
  • MCP Manager and Docker's MCP Enterprise Gateway publish no prices at all; both quote by sales call, so buyers cannot compare cost before talking to sales.MCP Manager, Docker MCP Enterprise Gateway · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2
  • Each platform meters a different unit (RPCs, tool calls, auth events, credits, external users, requests), and none converts them, so the same agent workload cannot be priced side by side.Smithery, Composio, Pipedream, Arcade, Toolhouse, Metorial · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2 · source 3 · source 4
  • Smithery's pricing page announces that it is now part of Arcade, but both still publish separate plans, and neither says whether Smithery plans will continue or move to Arcade pricing.Smithery, Arcade · checked 2026-10-18 · source 1 · source 2
