In simple English
This tool lets you run and manage programs inside isolated boxes on your computer. You can download software packages, start them, and stop them whenever you want. It works just like Docker, but it does not run a constant background service that stays awake in your memory. You do not need special administrator rights to use it on your own machine. It is free to use and maintained by a large community.
What it is
Podman is a tool for managing Open Container Initiative (an open set of standards for how to build and run software containers) containers, container images, and multi-container pods. It runs natively on Linux and uses a small virtual machine to run on Mac and Windows computers.
What it is good for
Solo builders who want to run databases, web servers, or other software inside isolated boxes without risking changes to their main operating system.
- Does not run a background daemon, which saves memory and keeps your server safer.
- Lets you run containers as a normal user without administrator rights.
- Recognizes the same command words as Docker, so you can switch easily.
- Setup on Mac or Windows requires downloading an extra virtual machine manager.
- Some complex networking setups differ from Docker and take time to learn.
- Running persistent services across system reboots needs extra configuration.
