In simple English
Serena is a helper tool for AI coding assistants. It lets the AI understand your code by its structure rather than just raw text. When you ask the AI to rename a function or find where a variable is used, it does this instantly. You install it once on your computer and connect it to your favourite AI terminal tool. It costs nothing in money, but you need to spend a few minutes setting it up.
What it is
An MCP (Model Context Protocol, a way for AI models to talk to external tools) toolkit that provides semantic code retrieval, editing, refactoring, and debugging capabilities to AI coding assistants.
What it is good for
Solo builders who use AI coding tools in large projects and want fewer broken references and clumsy text edits.
- Understands code structure across more than forty programming languages.
- Handles complex refactoring like cross-file symbol renames in one step.
- Connects easily with modern terminal AI tools like Claude Code.
- Requires an external tool called uv for installation.
- Language server backends may need extra dependencies installed for specific languages.
- Custom licence terms apply to the main application package.
