Unofficial API wrapper for the Schwab HTTP API

← Markets and trading
schwab-py: Schwab API wrapper. Connects Python scripts to Charles Schwab.

In simple English

This library lets you write Python code to check stock prices, place trades, and look at your account. It connects directly to the Charles Schwab broker system. You need an approved developer account on their website before you can use it. It is free to download, but you must have an active brokerage account and wait for Schwab to approve your app. If Schwab changes their system, your scripts might stop working until the library is updated.

What it is

schwab-py is an unofficial wrapper (a helper library that turns web requests into simple Python commands) for the Charles Schwab HTTP API (a set of rules that lets different computer programs talk to each other). It handles the secure login process and lets you fetch market data or place orders with a few lines of code.

What it is good for

Solo builders and traders who want to automate their stock trading strategies, pull historical pricing data, or build custom dashboards using a Charles Schwab account.

Good
  • Handles complex OAuth sign-in (a secure way to let an app access your account without sharing your password) and token refreshing automatically.
  • Provides direct access to quotes, historical pricing, option chains, and order placement.
  • Maintains a thin, unopinionated structure so you receive raw responses without hidden validation rules.
Watch for
  • Requires Python programming knowledge to set up and run.
  • Does not support paper trading or simulated accounts.
  • Charles Schwab must approve your developer application, which can take several days.
Replaces

Writing custom HTTP requests and OAuth token refresh logic for the broker API from scratch.

Works well with

pandas (a Python library for data manipulation and analysis)
