Trilium: hierarchical knowledge base. Build your personal knowledge base with Trilium Notes.

In simple English

Trilium Notes is a free notebook app for building large personal wikis. You can arrange notes in deep trees, write code, draw diagrams and encrypt sensitive pages. It runs on your own server or your local desktop, so your data stays private. You can access your notes through a web browser or mobile clients. The software costs nothing, but you need to spend time setting up your own hosting if you want sync between devices.

Good
  • Supports deep hierarchical note trees with cloning, allowing a single note to exist in multiple places.
  • Includes built-in diagramming, mind maps, geographic maps, and a code editor with syntax highlighting.
  • Offers robust self-hosting options with end-to-end encryption and a REST API for automation.
Watch for
  • Setup requires technical knowledge if you want to run your own self-hosted synchronization server.
  • Demands moderate server resources to handle large note trees and multiple concurrent connections smoothly.
  • The AGPL-3.0 licence places restrictions on distributing modified versions if you offer them as a network service.
