The open-source support inbox + live chat and inbox collaboration for teams

← Talking to customers

In simple English

Opendesk brings your customer emails, live chats, and help center articles into one shared place. Everyone on your team sees updates live as they happen. An optional artificial intelligence helper drafts replies, answers questions, and tags messages for you. You can use their hosted website or run the whole system on your own server for free. If you run it yourself, you need a server and basic technical knowledge to keep it updated.

What it is

Opendesk is an open-source help desk and customer support system built with Go, Elixir, and PostgreSQL (a system for storing data). It combines a shared inbox, live chat, knowledge base, and automated rules into a single package.

What it is good for

Solo builders and small teams who want a professional customer support inbox and live chat widget without paying monthly per-user fees to a big software company.

Good
  • Runs the exact same code whether you use their cloud or self-host it on your own server.
  • Includes an embeddable live chat widget for your website with typing indicators and identity verification.
  • Connects with external tools like GitHub, Linear, Slack, and Stripe for customer context.
Watch for
  • Self-hosting requires managing a Linux server, Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server), and DNS settings.
  • Losing the encryption key stored during setup makes all saved mailbox passwords unreadable.
  • Requires multiple programming runtimes and tools if you want to build it directly from source.
