In simple English
This is a ready-made collection of visual parts for websites, such as buttons, menus, and forms. It helps solo builders put together a clean and working page without drawing every piece from scratch. It works on phones, tablets, and desktop computers right out of the box. You do not pay anything to use it, and it runs inside your own website code. It saves you weeks of styling work, but your site might end up looking like many other sites.
What it is
Bootstrap is a front-end framework (a collection of ready-to-use design code and styling rules) containing pre-styled HTML, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets, a programming language used to describe the look and formatting of a document written in HTML), and JavaScript (a programming language that adds interactive elements to web pages) components. It provides a grid system and standard interface elements that adapt automatically to any screen size.
What it is good for
Solo builders and developers who want to launch a web application or landing page quickly without writing custom design code for every button and form field.
- Includes dozens of ready-made layout pieces like navigation bars, modals, and alert boxes.
- Adapts automatically to different screen sizes, from mobile phones to large computer monitors.
- Provides extensive documentation with copy-and-paste examples for almost every common interface need.
- Sites built with default settings often look identical to many other web applications.
- Overriding default styles with custom CSS can sometimes require fighting existing specificity rules.
- Includes many styling rules you might never use, adding extra data weight to your pages.
Writing custom CSS layout rules and interface components from scratch.
