In simple English
Writing tests for code takes a lot of time and effort. This tool creates tests for your Python programs automatically. It looks at your code and builds test files for you. You must run it inside a sealed box because it executes your code while it works. It is free to use and comes from a university research team.
What it is
Pynguin is a test generation tool for Python programs that uses search-based algorithms to find test cases. It inspects your functions and generates unit tests to check that your code runs correctly.
What it is good for
Solo builders who want to add automated tests to existing Python code without writing every test by hand.
- Saves hours of writing test files by hand.
- Works on existing Python codebases without manual setup.
- Uses the permissive MIT licence.
- Executes your code during test generation, which can wipe data if run carelessly.
- Is a research prototype, so generated tests may need manual cleanup.
- Requires Python 3.10 or newer to run.
