In simple English

When you build a web app, your backend server describes its routes in a file called OpenAPI. Writing the frontend code to talk to that server takes hours of repetitive typing. This tool reads your server file and writes all the request functions and data types for you. It supports React, Angular, Vue, and many other frameworks. It is free to use and saves you from fixing typos when your backend changes.

What it is

Orval is a command-line tool that reads OpenAPI v3 or Swagger v2 files in JSON or YAML format. It outputs ready-to-use TypeScript code for client requests, data models, and query hooks.

What it is good for

Solo developers building full-stack web applications who want to keep their frontend API calls instantly synchronized with backend changes without writing manual fetch code.

Good
  • Supports major frontend frameworks including React, Vue, Svelte, and Angular.
  • Generates mock data and data validation schemas automatically.
  • Saves hours of manual typing every time your backend API changes.
Watch for
  • Requires Node.js 22.18 or newer to run natively.
  • Generated code can be verbose if your OpenAPI specification is massive.
  • Configuring custom output templates takes time to learn.
