In simple English
Writing code means running tests to check for mistakes. The standard tool included with Rust runs these tests one after the other. This new tool runs many tests at the same time on all your computer cores. It finishes much faster and catches flaky tests that pass sometimes and fail other times. It is free to use and drops into your workflow with a single command change.
What it is
Cargo-nextest (a command-line tool that replaces the default cargo test command for Rust projects) is a faster test runner. It runs each test in its own isolated process to prevent them from interfering with one another.
What it is good for
Solo builders writing Rust who want their test suite to finish in seconds instead of minutes.
- Runs tests much faster by using all available computer cores at once.
- Isolates each test in its own process so one broken test cannot corrupt another.
- Outputs clear failure summaries and supports standard JUnit reporting formats for continuous integration.
- Requires an existing Rust project set up with Cargo.
- Some older test suites that rely on shared global state may need adjustments to pass when run in parallel.
- Requires a modern Rust toolchain to build from source if not installed via precompiled binaries.
The standard cargo test command built into the Rust toolchain.
Cargo (the standard package manager and build tool for Rust).
- rust-lang/cargo16k stars
Provides the built-in test runner that nextest replaces for faster execution.
- evanw/esbuild40k stars
Joins many JavaScript, TypeScript and CSS files into one, in well under a second.
- Textualize/textual38k stars
Lets a Python program draw a real interface inside a terminal, and serve the same thing to a browser.
- python-attrs/cattrs1.1k stars
Turns loose data into declared Python objects, and declared objects back into loose data.
