In simple English

When you want your app to talk to a web service, you usually have to learn a custom software kit. This tool reads a standard web service description file and writes the code for you. You get ready-to-use functions with autocomplete and error checking in your editor. It costs you nothing to run, but you need to regenerate your client code whenever the web service changes. It supports popular languages like C#, Go, Java, Python, and TypeScript.

What it is

Kiota is a command-line utility (a program you run in your terminal by typing text commands) that generates HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the underlying language of the web) client code. It parses an OpenAPI (a standard format for describing web APIs) specification and outputs a consistent SDK (software development kit, a set of tools that helps developers write apps for a specific service) across multiple programming languages.

What it is good for

Solo builders who need to integrate several different third-party web services into their application without learning a new HTTP library for every single one.

Good
  • Generates clean, strongly typed client code from any standard API description.
  • Keeps the same calling style across different programming languages.
  • Reduces manual boilerplate when calling external web services.
Watch for
  • Requires command-line usage and familiarity with OpenAPI description files.
  • Generated clients must be updated manually whenever the target API changes.
  • Some supported languages are still in preview or lack full feature parity.
Replaces

manual HTTP fetch calls and custom API wrapper classes
