In simple English
When you build a web app, you need to write code that matches your backend server. This tool reads your server definition file and writes that matching code for you. It saves you from writing boring types and fetching functions by hand. If your server changes, you run the tool again to update your app. It is free to use, and you run it on your own computer.
What it is
Kubb is a code generator for TypeScript (a programming language that adds strict types to JavaScript) that reads OpenAPI (a standard way to describe a web server interface) specifications. It uses a plugin system to output different files like Zod (a tool for checking data types) validators, React Query hooks, or Axios client functions.
What it is good for
Solo builders who use OpenAPI to design their backend and want to skip writing manual TypeScript types and API request functions for their frontend app.
- Generates correct TypeScript types automatically from your server definition.
- Saves hours of manual coding when your API changes frequently.
- Supports popular tools like React Query, Zod, and Axios through plugins.
- Requires comfort with the command line and configuration files.
- Generated code can clutter your repository if you do not output it to a dedicated folder.
- Breaks if your OpenAPI specification file contains errors or non-standard syntax.
