An offline-first photo manager for large local libraries

← Audio and video
Lap: private photo manager. Offline-first desktop application for large photo libraries.

In simple English

This program helps you organise and search through thousands of personal photos on your computer. It keeps your files in their existing folders on your hard drive instead of forcing them into a locked database. All artificial intelligence features run directly on your own machine without sending data to the cloud. You can search by text descriptions, faces, tags, and capture dates without paying a subscription fee. It works on macOS, Windows, and Linux computers.

What it is

A local-first desktop photo manager built with Tauri (a framework for building desktop apps with web technologies), Rust (a programming language focused on speed and safety), and Vue (a framework for building user interfaces). It scans local folders to index over 60 image, RAW, and video formats while keeping your original files untouched.

What it is good for

Solo builders and anyone with large family photo collections who wants an alternative to cloud-based photo services that respect privacy and avoid recurring monthly fees.

Good
  • Runs entirely offline with zero cloud storage required or forced accounts.
  • Organises photos using your existing folder structure instead of locking files away.
  • Includes local AI features like face recognition and text-based image search.
Watch for
  • Requires technical steps and command-line tools to build from source.
  • Consumes significant memory and CPU power during initial library indexing and face clustering.
  • Local tags, ratings, and AI data stay in a separate database and do not embed into your original files.
