In simple English
This tool lets you build online surveys, quizzes and tests on your own computer or server. It acts as an open-source alternative to commercial survey tools. You can create forms by hand or use an artificial intelligence assistant to draft them for you. It collects answers, grades exams automatically and shows you charts of the results. It costs you no money for software licences, though you need a place to run it.
What it is
SurveyKing is a self-hosted platform for forms, exams and question-bank practice built with Java and React (a JavaScript library for building user interfaces). It runs inside a Docker container (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server) and stores data in a built-in database.
What it is good for
Anyone who wants to collect feedback, run tests or host quizzes without paying a monthly fee to a cloud service. It removes the need to rely on external platforms that store your user data on third-party servers.
- Runs with a single Docker command for quick evaluation.
- Includes support for automatic exam grading and practice modes.
- Offers a visual editor with more than twenty question types.
- Requires Docker and basic command-line knowledge to set up.
- Uses around 1 GB of memory, so check your server has enough room.
- Some parts of the documentation and settings use Simplified Chinese by default.
