HyperDX: open-source observability. Unifies logs, traces, metrics and session replays.

In simple English

When your web application breaks in production, you need to find out why. This tool collects logs, error traces, and user session recordings in one place. It helps you search through all this data quickly without learning a complex query language. You can run it on your own server using Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server). It is free to use under the MIT licence, but you need at least 4 GB of memory to run it smoothly.

What it is

HyperDX is an open-source observability platform powered by ClickHouse (a fast column-oriented database for handling large volumes of data). It brings together logs, metrics, traces, and session replays into a single web interface and terminal dashboard.

What it is good for

Solo builders and small teams who want a self-hosted alternative to expensive commercial monitoring tools. It removes the need to jump between multiple dashboards to figure out why an API request failed or what a user did right before an error occurred.

Good
  • Combines logs, metrics, traces, and session replays in one interface.
  • Supports OpenTelemetry (a vendor-neutral standard for collecting application telemetry data) out of the box.
  • Includes a terminal user interface for checking logs and traces directly from your shell.
Watch for
  • Requires at least 4 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores to run locally for testing.
  • Running a production setup requires managing dependent services like ClickHouse and MongoDB.
  • Anonymous usage data collection is enabled by default and requires an environment variable to turn off.
