Eigent: The Open Source Cowork Desktop - Local and Free Alternative to Claude Cowork and Codex

← AI and models
Eigent: open source AI cowork desktop. Local alternative for multi-agent workflows.

In simple English

Eigent is a desktop application that lets artificial intelligence agents do computer work for you. You can give a task to a single assistant or coordinate a team of workers that run in parallel. It handles writing code, organizing files, checking logs and running scheduled routines. You can run it completely on your own machine with local models or connect it to cloud services. It is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence.

What it is

Eigent is an Electron (a desktop application framework that lets web apps run as native desktop software) desktop app with a React (a JavaScript library for building user interfaces) interface and a FastAPI (a modern Python framework for building fast web APIs) backend. It uses multi-agent workflows to break down large jobs and execute them step by step.

What it is good for

Solo builders who want to automate repetitive workflows like organizing files, reviewing code, or running scheduled reports without paying for managed cloud subscriptions.

Good
  • Runs locally on your machine to keep your files and credentials private.
  • Supports multiple AI models including local runners like Ollama and cloud APIs.
  • Coordinates multiple agents to handle parallel sub-tasks and complex workflows.
Watch for
  • Requires Node.js, Python, and package managers installed on your system to run from source.
  • Running multiple local models or agents demands significant memory and CPU or GPU resources.
  • Connecting to local backends and setting up Python environments can be tricky for non-programmers.
