apache/couchdb

Seamless multi-primary syncing database with an intuitive HTTP/JSON API, designed for reliability

← Data and databases
Apache CouchDB: sync database. Stores JSON documents and syncs across servers.

In simple English

CouchDB is a database program. It saves your app data in plain text records called JSON documents, which stand for JavaScript Object Notation (a simple text format for storing structured data). You talk to it using web requests, known as an API (a set of rules that lets different software programs talk to each other). The best part is that two different servers can run CouchDB and copy changes back and forth without a central master server. It is free to use under the Apache-2.0 licence (a legal permit that lets you run, change and share software freely). You need your own server to run it on.

What it is

Apache CouchDB is an open-source NoSQL database (a database that stores data in flexible documents instead of rigid tables) designed for reliable replication. It uses Erlang (a programming language built for keeping systems running all the time) under the hood and provides a built-in web dashboard for managing your data.

What it is good for

Solo builders who need an app to work offline on a phone or laptop and sync changes back to a server later will find this very useful. It removes the pain of writing custom sync code when users switch between devices.

Good
  • Syncs data smoothly between multiple independent servers without complex setup.
  • Stores data as flexible JSON documents so you do not need to plan a rigid database schema.
  • Includes a built-in web dashboard for viewing and editing your data right in the browser.
Watch for
  • Requires learning a different way of querying data compared to traditional SQL databases.
  • Needs enough RAM (random-access memory, the fast working memory your server uses to run active programs) to run the Erlang runtime smoothly.
  • Complex multi-server setups can be tricky to debug when network splits happen.
Replaces

Traditional relational databases that need custom sync logic for offline-first apps.

Works well with

Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server).
