In simple English
This is a private home for your digital photo collection. It runs on a computer you own, so big technology companies never see your pictures. It scans your files and sorts them by who is in them, where they were taken, and what objects appear. You can search for pictures by typing ordinary words like beach or dog. You pay nothing for the software, but you need a server or a spare computer to keep it running.
What it is
LibrePhotos (a self-hosted, open-source photo management service with automatic face recognition and semantic search) is a monorepo containing a Django backend, a React web client, and an Expo mobile app. It uses machine learning models running through ONNX Runtime (a way to run artificial intelligence models efficiently on standard hardware without heavy software dependencies) to process your images.
What it is good for
Solo builders who want to replace commercial cloud photo storage with a private alternative that organises large picture collections automatically.
- Runs entirely on your own hardware, keeping your personal photos private.
- Recognises faces and groups pictures by person automatically.
- Supports semantic search so you can find images by describing what is in them.
- Needs 4 to 8 GB of memory, so check your server has room.
- Machine learning features run slowly without a dedicated graphics card.
- Initial import and face clustering take significant time for large libraries.
