In simple English
Many old computer games use a specific audio tool made by Microsoft. This tool only works on Windows computers. If you try to run those games on Linux or Mac, the sound breaks. FAudio pretends to be that Microsoft tool. It lets the game play sound normally on your operating system. You need to know how to compile C++ code to use it.
What it is
FAudio is a C++ library that reimplements the DirectX Audio runtime libraries for open platforms. It handles sound effects, spatial audio and audio mixing for games built with FNA.
What it is good for
Game developers who want to port their Windows games to Linux or macOS without rewriting the audio engine.
- Runs Windows game audio code on Linux and macOS.
- Matches the exact behavior of the original Microsoft audio library.
- Depends only on SDL for low-level tasks.
- Requires C++ compilation knowledge to set up.
- Custom licence terms require checking if you redistribute it.
- Mainly built for game developers rather than casual users.
