In simple English
This tool searches inside your files for words or patterns. It runs inside your terminal and goes through folders very quickly. By default, it ignores hidden files and items listed in your gitignore file. It costs nothing and runs locally on your machine. You do not need an internet connection to use it.
What it is
ripgrep is a line-oriented search utility written in the Rust programming language. It scans directories recursively for regular expressions while automatically skipping binary files and version control ignores.
What it is good for
Developers and writers who need to find specific text across large codebases or document collections without waiting for slow search tools.
- Extremely fast search speeds that outperform standard grep.
- Automatically skips hidden files and gitignore patterns by default.
- Supports full Unicode and searching inside compressed files.
- Requires comfort with the command line terminal.
- Does not conform to POSIX standards like traditional grep.
- Advanced features like PCRE2 regex need extra build steps.
