Backtesting and trading engines let you test a trading strategy on historical market data and then run it on live prices, on paper or with real money. Three kinds compete. Charting and broker platforms such as TradingView, NinjaTrader and TradeStation put backtests next to charts and order entry. Dedicated strategy tools such as AmiBroker, Wealth-Lab, StrategyQuant X and TrendSpider focus on portfolio tests, optimisation and robustness checks, with or without code. Developer platforms such as QuantConnect and VectorBT PRO serve Python and C# quants, and newer services such as Composer let investors describe a strategy and have it traded automatically. Open-source engines cover the same ground, from NautilusTrader, LEAN and vn.py to freqtrade and Jesse for crypto and hftbacktest for market making.
