DevPod: remote dev environments. Runs your code in isolated containers anywhere.

In simple English

This tool creates a sealed workspace for your code on any computer you choose. It works like the remote setup on GitHub, but you control where the files live and what it costs. You can run it on your own laptop or rent a powerful server in the cloud. It keeps all your tools separate so they never mess up your main operating system. It is free to use and runs entirely on your own machine without a central server.

What it is

DevPod is an open-source, client-side command-line tool (a program you operate by typing text commands in your terminal) that spins up development environments using the standard DevContainer specification. It connects your preferred code editor to a Docker (a way to run a program inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break anything else on your server) container or a cloud virtual machine.

What it is good for

Solo builders who want to code on a powerful cloud server while using their local laptop editor, or anyone who wants every project to have its own clean setup without installing compilers on their main machine.

Good
  • Runs on your own hardware or any cloud provider with no vendor lock-in.
  • Works with Visual Studio Code, JetBrains editors, or any editor that connects through SSH (a secure network protocol for logging into remote computers).
  • Automatically shuts down unused cloud virtual machines to save money.
Watch for
  • Requires Docker or a cloud provider account to be set up before you can start coding.
  • Uses significant RAM and processor resources when running multiple containers on your local machine.
  • Troubleshooting network and SSH connection issues can be difficult for non-programmers.
